Brawl of the Odd
A downloadable PVP arena
Brawl of the Odd is a non-lethal combat arena where players can engage in a fight club or fight against each other.
These rules are compatible with any game and will work in any tabletop system. They are particularly well-suited to games like Into the Odd, Cairn, Mausritter, Knave, and other titles that fit into the broad Old-School Renaissance (OSR) genre of tabletop games. Some minor modifications may be needed to adapt this to other systems, but the rules will largely work as written in any context. Read the comments below for how someone adapted this into D&D 5e.
The combat rules include mechanics for actions such as strike, grapple, feint, dodge, and taunt. Players can also use their character's items in creative ways.
When can you use this?
You can implement this fight club and player-versus-player (PVP) arena in any way you like. Here are some suggestions for ways you can introduce it:
- A tavern fight club in which players can take part
- A way for players to fight against each other for some fun between adventures
- A place for players to earn extra money and experience
These rules are included in Brawl at the Waste Dump, available on the Tiny Tails Patreon. The Patreon module is designed for Mausritter and includes flavour from the setting, as well as 20 NPCs to battle against.
The downloads include the rules in a trifold pamphlet, in both A4 and US letter sizes - simply print your preferred size back-to-back and fold twice. There is also a transparent PNG of the arena layout, so you can place it over any image, making it easy to implement in any setting or context.
You can use these fight club and PVP mechanics as published, or use them as a system reference document (SRD) to create something new. You're welcome to use and adapt Brawl of the Odd in any project of your own, even commercial ones. Highly recommended. I've really enjoyed using this in my 5e campaigns; it's a great level of complexity for a mini-game, not too simple and not too complicated, and especially helpful to slot into a rowdy tavern in a pinch. For reference, these are the adaptations I made to fit in with 5e:
